Hindi (हिन्दी) is one of the official languages of the Republic of India, spoken natively by approximately 260 million people, with an additional 120 million using it as a second language. It is the third most spoken language in the world by number of speakers. India celebrates Hindi Language Day (Hindi Diwas) on September 14 each year, marking the adoption of Hindi as an official language in 1949.

Hindi is a direct descendant of Sanskrit, belonging to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European language family. It is written using the Devanagari script, a left-to-right abugida that combines consonants and vowels. Notably, the language does not use definite or indefinite articles such as “a”, “an”, or “the”.

Indian culture is renowned for its exceptional hospitality, which is beautifully captured in the traditional Hindi phrase:
“अतिथि देवो भव” (Atithi Devo Bhava) – “The guest is like God.”

This expression stems from Hindu philosophy and is widely observed throughout Indian society, especially in rural communities, where receiving guests is treated as a sacred duty.

Hindi also plays a central role in the global film industry, as it is the dominant language of Bollywood, the world’s largest film producer, releasing over 1,000 films annually. These films play a significant role in promoting the Hindi language and culture across the globe.

Additionally, the Hindi language contains numerous loanwords from Arabic, Persian, Portuguese, and English, reflecting the diverse historical influences on the Indian subcontinent.
