About Danish Language and Culture
Danish or dansk is the official language of the Kingdom of Denmark. Spoken natively by approximately 6 million people.
A language whose speakers can also understand Norwegian and Swedish, the Danish speaking community is the reason for one of the items on your child’s Christmas list, for the world famous LEGO – shortened from “Leg godt” or “Play well”- brick was invented by none other than Dane, Ole Kirk Kristiansen. Speaking of children and someone with quite a similar name…the sensational father of our favorite fairy tales, Hans Christian Andersen gifted our world with the most beautiful and heartbreaking tale of The Little Match Girl whose story is a staple in every household over the Holidays. Don’t forget to light your Calendar Candle today- a Danish Christmas tradition, where a candle is decorated and marked with 24 lines, marking the days between December 1st and December 24th. The candle is to be lit everyday and blown out before it could reach the mark of the next day. Enjoy watching your beautifully lit candle while eating a plate of Christmas Risalamande!
