About Dutch language and culture

Dutch or Nederlands is the official language of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Republic of Suriname and is among the official list of languages in Belgium. Spoken natively by approximately 24 million people.

Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Vermeer, we sure wish we could drink from the same magical fountain these world-renowned Dutch artists have. Did you know Van Gogh’s favorite color was yellow? Much like the decorations on Sinterklaas’ beautiful red robe, the most important figure of the Dutch Christmas season…but who exactly is Sinterklaas? Sinterklaas or St. Nicholas arrives to the Netherlands from Spain by boat on the first Saturday following November 11th. December 5th marks the “evening of the presents” or “pakjesavond”, when children all over the country put out their wooden shoes and leave carrots for Sinterklaas’ horse, Amerigo, to eat. Besides presents, Sinterklaas also leaves a large chocolate letter shaped like the first initial of the name of the child he is currently visiting.

On Christmas Eve the “Kerstman” or “Father Christmas” then makes sure to visit from Lapland to deliver even more presents to Dutch children everywhere. Soon we will all be busy baking in the kitchen, so we thought we would share a Dutch Sinterklaas cookie, the kruidnoten, that could be a nice addition to your Christmas cookie list.
