About German language and culture

German or Deutsch is the official language of Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein, and is among the official list of languages in Switzerland, where about 65% of the total population speak German as their native language, Belgium and Luxembourg. Spoken natively by approximately 90 million people.

Known for their incredible selection of beers (1500 different kinds to be exact), their thousands of beautiful castles, their expertise in soccer and luxury cars, the German-speaking world contributed true wonders to the world we know today. Although we still have a couple months until Christmas, it won’t be long now before we are at the Christmas tree market, picking out our Tannenbaum, a beloved tradition that originates from 16th century Germany.

Since we are on the topic of Christmas, we will certainly all be humming Salzburg born composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Alleluia, seeing Vienna born composer, Johann Strauss II’s operetta, The Bat and reading passages from the first printed book in Europe, the Gutenberg Bible over the holidays. To this day, Germany is ranked among the leading publishers in terms of revenue in the world, publishing over 90,000 titles per year. No wonder, when we get to thank the German- speaking world for recognizing the literary genius in Goethe, Kafka or Brecht, just to name a few.

Today, there isn’t an art lover who wouldn’t know of the beauty of Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss or a motion picture enthusiast who wouldn’t recognize the names of Sandra Bullock and Christoph Waltz.
