About Greek Language and Culture

Greek or Ελληνικά is the official language of Greece and is among the official list of languages in Cyprus. Spoken natively by approximately 13 million people.

A language that was originally written from right to left and had two official versions until 1976, Greek has now adapted solely to its Demotic version as its official language. Today our world definitely would not be the same had it not been introduced to the wonders of Homer, Socrates, Aristotle or Plato, but do you know the story of Thespis? The formation of drama is linked to many religious rituals but mainly to the festivals and celebrations of Dionysus.

Toward the end of January a choir would gather in the cities in front of the altar of Dionysus to sing arms and dithyrambs, in which they presented the mythical fate of Dionysus. The first step toward “modern theater” was perhaps when the leader left the choir behind, stepped forward to stand in front of the altar of Dionysus and began impersonating him and telling more condensed chapters of his life, to which the choir responded with worshipping vocals. His name was Thespis, the first recorded actor…sound familiar, that’s right the word thespian meaning actor and actress was formulated from Thespis’ name.

It is the season of baking, so why don’t you try something new? We leave you with a pastry called Kataifi and the words of Sophocles, “One word Frees us of all the weight and pain of life: That word is love.”
