New Beginnings in Cherry Blossom Season

Did you know that in Japan the school year starts in April?
While in most parts of the world the academic year begins in September, the Japanese chose spring as a symbol of new beginnings and renewal! During cherry blossom season (sakura), students excitedly put on their new uniforms and take part in the official, ceremonial entrance ceremony, called Nyūgakushiki.

After the ceremony comes the first big decision: choosing a school club. The Japanese club system (bukatsu) is unique worldwide. These after-school activities are led by teachers and fall into two main categories: sports clubs (e.g., baseball, soccer, track and field) and cultural clubs (e.g., brass band, choir, theater). Participation is free, and the clubs are extremely popular—they are an important way of fostering team spirit, discipline, and a sense of community!
