About Norwegian language and culture
Norwegian or norsk is the official language of the Kingdom of Norway. Spoken natively by approximately 5.32 million people.
A language that has two distinct writing standards- “bokmål” (book language) and “nynorsk” (new Norwegian)- Norwegian is one of the few pitch accent languages, meaning when two similarly pronounced words have different meanings based on the pitches on which they are pronounced. Brigadier Sir Nils Olav III is the current colonel-in-chief of the Norwegian King’s Guard. Oh, did we forget to mention that he is a king penguin? Norwegian, Roald Amundsen, the first person to reach the South Pole gifted the Edinburgh Zoo a king penguin at the zoo’s opening. The rest is history. Edvard Munch’s The Scream has definitely made it into popular culture. Did you know that there are different versions of the piece? In 2012, the 1895 pastel version was auctioned off at around 130 million dollars, making it one of the most expensive pieces of art ever sold.
Since Norwegian does not have one single word for “please” we thought we would teach you two polite ways of saying, “please” without actually saying the word.
