About Portugese language and culture

Portuguese (português) is a global language spoken by over 250 million people as their native tongue. Originating from Portugal, it is now the official language of countries such as Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, and also enjoys official status in East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, Macau, and Cape Verde. It is one of the working languages of the United Nations and the African Union.

Although Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese are mutually intelligible in writing, they differ significantly in pronunciation, intonation, vocabulary, and some grammatical structures. For example, Brazilian Portuguese often uses open vowels, while European Portuguese tends to mute final vowels. Despite these differences, communication between the two remains fluent — just like football legends Cristiano Ronaldo and Ronaldinho would have no trouble chatting over a warm bowl of Caldo Verde.

Portuguese is deeply enriched by its literary heritage. Renowned authors include Luís de Camões, who penned the national epic Os Lusíadas, Fernando Pessoa, one of modernism’s greatest poets, and José Saramago, Nobel laureate in Literature. Portuguese literature flourishes across Europe, South America, and Africa.

In the arts, fado, a traditional genre of Portuguese melancholic song, has been recognized as part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. In Brazil, cultural exports like samba, bossa nova, and modern architecture by Oscar Niemeyer reflect the vibrancy of Lusophone creativity.

For travelers seeking to explore hidden gems beyond Lisbon and Porto, the village of Monsaraz in the Alentejo region offers a breathtaking experience. Surrounded by medieval walls, this whitewashed hilltop town offers cobbled streets and panoramic views over the Alqueva reservoir.

A culinary highlight of the region is açorda alentejana, a warm garlic, coriander, and olive oil bread soup topped with poached egg — rustic, comforting, and full of Alentejo character.
