About Russian language and culture
Russia, the largest country in the world spanning both parts of Europe and Asia, boasts a rich and multifaceted cultural heritage. Russian is the sole official language at the federal level, yet over 25 regional languages enjoy official status in various republics and autonomous regions across the country.
Russian is the most widespread Slavic language, the most spoken native language in Europe, and ranks as the seventh most spoken language by native speakers and ninth overall in total speakers globally. Native speakers number around 118 million, while total speakers range between 253 to 260 million.
The cultural legacy of Russia spans centuries. Its roots extend to the Kievan Rus period (10th–13th centuries), where culture was dominated by ecclesiastical art from Byzantine influence, such as icon painting and church architecture. During the Muscovite period (14th–17th centuries), religious art flourished with iconic works like those housed in Moscow’s Saint Basil’s Cathedral, blending Byzantine and Asiatic elements.
The 19th and early 20th centuries saw the rise of Russian realism and, later, the cultural wave known as the Silver Age, with movements such as symbolism and the avant-garde shaping modernist thought. The arts—including ballet, classical music, painting, and architecture—thrived alongside folk traditions, ornate religious symbolism, and colorful national costumes.
