About Spanish language and culture

A language that has the second largest number of native speakers, Spanish is one of the few languages that utilize inverted question and exclamation marks. Being one of the Romance languages, Spanish developed from Vulgar Latin, however aside from Latin, it was also greatly influenced by the Arabic language.

In fact, some say that Spain’s capital, Madrid was named in the 8th century, when Río Manzanares was called “al-Magrit” in Arabic, meaning “water source”. The river’s surrounding area was first called Mayrit, meaning “water”, then Magerit, meaning “place of water”, then Matrit and eventually it settled on the name we love and know today, Madrid.

In Spain and most of Spanish speaking South America, the custom of naming a child is as follows: one given name and two surnames. The first surname being the father’s first surname and the second being the mother’s first surname.

Two of the most influential artists of the 20th century and perhaps of all time are Spanish, Pablo Ruiz Picasso who co-pioneered the art movement Cubism and Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech, better know as Salvador Dalí who was the leading artist of the Surrealism movement. The first modern novel was in fact written by Spaniard, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, titled The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha which was published in 1605.

As for fictional characters, in Spanish-speaking culture, the Tooth Fairy’s job is actually carried out by Ratoncito Pérez or Perez the Mouse, who replaces a child’s lost baby tooth with a gift.

Did you actually know that Pheasant Island is in Spain for six months of the year and in France the other six months of the year?
