Pancake Day

Today we asked one of our English teachers about some interesting English traditions.

“Due to its topicality, I would like to highlight the beloved Pancake Day.

Pancake Day, also known as Shrove Tuesday, is celebrated by English-speaking countries every year on a Tuesday, this year on 21 February.

It is a great celebration, indeed, since it signals the last day before Ash wednesday, the start of Lent. So people are invited to feast and have fun all day before giving up eating fast food, sweets and other traits that are bad for one’s health.

Pancake Day has its very own traditions as well. Pancake racing is the oldest one, with roots dating back to the year of 1445 in Olney, England.

The contestants, often dressed up in costumes, are running holding a frying pan with a pancake in it. They have to toss it three times during the race, and the first person to complete the course is the winner.”
