Virtual travels 55th day – Portugal

Lisbon – Alfama

There’s something special about Alfama’s lovely paved sloped streets and historical buildings. If we climb up to one of Lisbon’s overlooks from the seven hills that the city was built on, we are welcomed with amazing views to the surrounding area, although you can easily get lost in the maze of Alfama’s alleys.
Even the locals have a hard time sometimes!

The oldest part of the city is the only part that survived the trembling earthquake in 1755 in Lisbon. At first it was inhabited by the local fishermen and the lower classes, as it was the main part of the city during the time of the Moors.
The local architecture bears resemblance to the Moorish style.

The infamous tram line 28 takes you through the mazy streets of Alfama. 🚋
This is also where the musical genre “fado” was born. Fado is about melancholic songs sung by a singer with a portugese guitar paired up with another guitarist toting a spanish guitar.
According to the locals, you can experience the best fado music if you look for more hidden places, where handwritten notices advertise the night of fado music. 🎼
